The diet industry. Chances are, even if you have tried to avoid it, this mega-corporation and its reach has followed you around. Maybe it’s popped up when you’ve been home, at school, at work, or every time you’ve opened social media and maybe, its focus on your body has felt relentless – nudging you every January and poking you every June. It’s big business. So big in fact, that multiple sources put its yearly revenue at over two billion pounds. With such monetary muscle then, it’s perhaps not surprising that diet-culture can afford to reach you anywhere but at what cost?
“From as far back as I can remember, people around me have always talked about dieting and what they should or shouldn’t eat.” Mo* recalls, whilst feeling food-based pressure from a young age is something Hana remembers too. “Diet culture is something I’ve been conscious of since the age of about eleven.” With many of us bombarded since childhood and with one striking report claiming that the average person will feel influenced to start 126 ‘diets’ in their lifetime, the industry has clearly been making a mark.
